Fugitive Emissions

Configure an asset to track fugitive emissions, and upload consumption values

What is a Fugitive Emission?

Fugitive emissions are a type of emission that comes from heating and cooling systems within an asset. These systems consume regular electricity, but they also leak small amounts of their coolant. Although the percentages of leakage can be very small, the resulting carbon impact can have a large effect on the asset's overall performance.

There are many different types of cooling systems, and many different types of coolant among these. Determining the type of coolant used in an asset's system and having the system regularly inspected to quantify and manage leakage allows asset managers to assess their cooling system's impact on the asset, and apply corrective measures such as upgrades as soon as necessary.

Contents:

1: Adding a Fugitive Emission Type

This step requires the user to be an asset manager.

Navigate to the Asset Manager and select the asset in question:

Select the Fugitive Emissions card on the asset's Operational Performance dashboard:

step2

Click on the "Add New" button in the top right of the page:

step3

Fill in the submeter detail:

Ensure that the scope is set correctly based on the usage of the system (tenant or landlord). Select the correct gas type for the system. Note that the GWP (Global Warming Potential) for the selected gas type is displayed below: this will govern the conversion between leakage percentage and CO2e.

step4

Click submit to save the new submeter.

The new submeter will now appear in the list on the main page:

2: Assigning or re-assigning a fugitive emissions submeter

If the user did not assign a person to submit the gas type when creating the submeter, or if the person to submit has changed, the assignee must be edited. This step requires the user to be an asset manager.

Click the "Settings" button on the fugitive emissions page:

Select the correct gas type from the list on the left:

Change the user to the required person:

This person must be a user on the asset to be assigned

Close the dialog with the "X" in the top left:

Changes are saved automatically

3a: Navigating to the submit page to a fugitive emissions gas type

For this step, the user must be assigned to a gas type (see step 2 for details)

There are three possible places to submit from: the asset level, the fund level, and the tasks page.

Asset Level:

Click on the year to submit for in the table on the fugitive emissions page:

Fund Level:

Navigate to the Funds Page and select the correct fund:

Select the fugitive emissions card from the fund operational performance dashboard:

Open the detailed breakdown for the correct asset by pressing the "gas types" button:

Click on the year to submit for in the table:

Tasks page

Navigate to the Tasks Page and select the correct task from the list:

Note that tasks can be searched for as well as filtered down to make finding the correct task easier

3b: Submitting to a fugitive emissions gas type

Submitting to a fugitive emissions gas type requires two numbers: the leakage percentage, and the overall volume of the system. These numbers should be provided by the results of an inspection. In addition, users can upload evidence if available, or mark values as an estimate for future revision.

Note that depending on the path taken, these screens will look different. However, the required information is exactly the same.

Asset and Funds:

Tasks:

Enter the values for leakage percentage and overall volume:

Select the type of data input:

Note that if "actual with evidence" is selected, the evidence must be uploaded below.

Select "submit" to save the value:

The value will now be visible on the fugitive emissions dashboard:

Note that the value is displayed in kgCO2e, calculated from the values entered when submitting.
